The UK Financial Conduct Authority will open its application gateway for the country’s new cryptoasset regime on September 30, 2026, beginning the formal process for firms that want to operate under the framework. The main application window is scheduled to run until February 28, 2027.

The new regime itself does not start immediately. According to the FCA’s timetable, it will take effect on October 25, 2027, giving businesses a transition period to prepare submissions and move through the regulator’s authorisation process while existing rules remain in place.

A shift from registration to authorisation

The upcoming system marks a broader regulatory change than a simple new filing requirement. Many crypto companies in the UK currently deal with the FCA mainly through the country’s anti-money-laundering registration framework.

Under the incoming regime, a larger part of the sector will move into the standard Financial Services and Markets Act structure. In practice, that means affected firms will be assessed as authorised financial businesses rather than only appearing on a crypto AML register.

What happens when the gateway opens

The September 30 opening is the point at which firms can begin submitting applications under the new regime. The FCA has already urged businesses to start preparing and has been providing pre-application support ahead of the launch.

That makes the gateway opening an important operational milestone, even though it does not mean the new rules are already in force. It is the start of the practical transition from preparation to formal regulatory review.

The rules still begin in 2027

The FCA has said the cryptoasset regime will begin on October 25, 2027. Until that date, the current rules continue to apply while firms work through the authorisation process.

This distinction matters because the opening of the gateway could be mistaken for the start of the regime itself. The regulator’s timeline separates the application period from the date the new framework actually takes effect.

What the timeline means for the market

For consumers, the opening of the application process is not expected to change conditions overnight. The immediate impact falls more directly on the companies that serve them, as the regulatory timetable becomes more concrete.

The months after September 30 may also provide a clearer picture of which crypto businesses plan to continue operating under the UK’s new framework over the longer term. The next confirmed step is the opening of the gateway, followed by the main application window through February 28, 2027, before the regime starts on October 25, 2027.
