Anchorage Digital has applied to register as a swap dealer with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, a move aimed at expanding its institutional digital asset derivatives business. The filing was made through Anchorage Digital Swap Dealer, LLC, and is currently awaiting review by the National Futures Association.

If the application is approved, the company plans to offer European-style options on Bitcoin and Ether with maturities of up to one year. Anchorage said the offering would allow institutional clients to trade digital asset derivatives with a CFTC-registered counterparty while using the firm's custody and related services.

Registration plan centers on options expansion

The application marks a step toward broadening Anchorage Digital's role in crypto derivatives for institutional customers. Rather than launching the business outside a federal framework, the company is seeking registration that would place the swap dealer entity under the CFTC regime.

Anchorage has said additional products could be introduced over time, but its initial plan is focused on European-style Bitcoin and Ether options with terms extending to one year. The company has not indicated that approval has been granted, and the filing remains under NFA review.

Target market is institutional

The planned business is intended for institutional clients, not a broad retail market. Anchorage's pitch is that customers would be able to transact in digital asset derivatives with a CFTC-registered counterparty while also using the firm's existing custody and other services.

According to the company, a significant share of recent growth in its options activity has come from public companies that hold Bitcoin and Ether on their balance sheets. It also pointed to asset managers and funds that use options as a way to manage market exposure.

What registration would mean

If Anchorage Digital Swap Dealer, LLC is approved, the entity would be subject to CFTC requirements covering capital, margin, and risk management. The company has framed that structure as a way to align its crypto options business with the federal framework already applied in other markets.

That does not change the fact that the current status is still an application. The next confirmed step is the National Futures Association's review of the filing, which will determine whether Anchorage can proceed with the planned swap dealer registration and the options offering tied to it.
