Zcash developers say users do not need to wait for the network’s Ironwood upgrade or a full migration away from Orchard to check the coin’s supply. The clarification comes after renewed debate over an Orchard vulnerability disclosed earlier this year and whether it could have led to hidden inflation.
Questions Around Orchard and Ironwood
The discussion picked up after community questions about when the Ironwood migration would be considered complete. A contributor identified as Boston Zcash said that point may never arrive in the usual sense, because some Orchard funds are likely to remain in place indefinitely.
According to that explanation, some private keys will be lost, very small balances may never be spent, and developer testing funds may remain unrecovered. Zcash developers pointed to older shielded pools as precedent: Sprout, introduced in 2016, and Sapling, launched in 2018, still reportedly hold more than 500,000 ZEC combined years after those systems went live.
Local Verification of Supply
Zcash co-founder Zooko said the current ZEC supply can already be checked independently by anyone running a fully synchronized Zcash node. Rather than waiting months or years for wallet holders to move funds, users can inspect the blockchain’s recorded supply directly on their own machines.
Zooko said that total currently stands at 16,848,458 ZEC. The comment was framed as a direct response to speculation that any secret inflation would only become visible after a long migration period. Developers argued that the overall supply is auditable now, regardless of how quickly users shift funds out of Orchard.
How Ironwood Changes Orchard Accounting
Developers said the more important issue is not whether every coin leaves Orchard, but how the protocol restricts movement once Ironwood activates. Under the planned rules, Orchard will stop accepting new deposits and internal transfers. Coins will only be able to exit through a protocol-controlled turnstile.
That turnstile is designed to log each withdrawal against the amount previously deposited into Orchard, creating an accounting boundary around the pool. Frank Braun said this migration path gives added assurance that coins moved out of Orchard would not be exposed to any hypothetical inflation inside that pool, while maintaining that the total ZEC supply can still be verified today.
Zooko agreed with that view, while also warning that users who migrate funds should use privacy tools such as Nym or Tor. He said the migration process can reveal the IP address associated with a ZEC balance.
Other Features in the Upgrade
Ironwood also includes ZIP 2005, which introduces quantum-recoverable notes. Developers described the feature as preparation for a future in which quantum computing could weaken current encryption methods. They said it does not make Zcash fully quantum-safe at present, but is meant to provide a foundation for future recovery mechanisms.
The upgrade is also set to include formal verification of Ironwood’s balance integrity. Project Tachyon said researchers completed a machine-checked mathematical proof intended to show that the protocol’s key balance rules behave according to their specifications.
The latest developer comments are aimed at narrowing the distinction between two separate issues: whether ZEC supply can be audited now, and whether moving funds out of Orchard can provide extra protection against any theoretical flaw in that pool. In their account, the first is already possible through a synced node, while the second is part of Ironwood’s longer transition.
