Zcash is introducing a new full node called Zakura as part of a wider effort to expand the network’s capacity while keeping its privacy model intact. The software arrives ahead of the Ironwood network upgrade, which is scheduled to activate on July 28 at mainnet block 3,428,143.

New node before legacy client sunset

Zakura is a pruned, fast-syncing fork of Zebra, the Rust-based Zcash node software. It also includes a compatibility mode designed to mimic the legacy zcashd client, a feature intended to help wallets and exchanges continue operating smoothly as zcashd approaches end-of-life.

The release is positioned as the first live component of a larger technical roadmap. That plan is aimed at moving Zcash beyond its current limits and toward payment-network scale, while maintaining verifiability and strong privacy protections.

Scaling ambitions and technical approach

According to the project, the long-term objective is to let Zcash process tens of thousands of payments per second, putting it in the range of major card networks such as Visa and Mastercard. The challenge is not only throughput, but doing so without weakening the network’s privacy guarantees or overburdening full nodes and wallets.

Zakura’s design addresses several of those constraints. Pruning is meant to sharply reduce disk requirements for node operators. A fast block propagation system is intended to move blocks across the network quickly so nodes can stay synchronized under heavier load. The software is also built around reducing the amount of verification data nodes must handle.

That broader architecture draws on work from Project Tachyon, which uses recursive proofs to cut down the data each node needs to verify. Another piece is private information retrieval, which is meant to help wallets obtain the data they need without exposing which records are being requested. Together, those changes are presented as a way to reduce bottlenecks that could otherwise prevent Zcash from scaling.

Ironwood’s role

Ironwood is the immediate milestone tied to Zakura’s launch. The upgrade introduces a turnstile mechanism at the boundary of the Orchard shielded pool. Its purpose is to cap withdrawals and prevent counterfeit ZEC from entering the circulating supply.

In that sense, Ironwood is not only a feature upgrade but also a reliability measure for the network. Zakura supports the upgrade from its initial release, making the new node part of the transition path as Zcash prepares for the activation block later this month.

Team and funding

The Zakura effort is led by Sean Bowe and Dev Ojha. The team maintains the software as a fork of Zebra, and the work is funded through private ZEC donations, according to the source article.

The release does not by itself deliver the full scale envisioned by the project. Instead, it marks the first deployed step in a broader attempt to build a privacy-preserving payment network that can handle far higher transaction volumes without giving up the ability for the system to remain verifiable.

Zcash’s latest node rollout therefore serves two purposes at once: near-term support for the Ironwood activation and longer-term groundwork for a network that aims to move from roughly one private transaction per second toward much higher throughput.
