Authorities in the United Arab Emirates and Sweden have detained seven people in a coordinated money-laundering investigation that investigators said relied heavily on tracing cryptocurrency flows. The operation included the arrest in the UAE of a Swedish national who was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice, alongside the simultaneous detention of six suspected members of his group in Sweden.

According to the investigation, the network moved about 70 million Swedish krona, or roughly $7.1 million, over a 10-month period. Officials said the group used cryptocurrencies to transfer and conceal the value of proceeds linked to criminal activity.

Coordinated arrests in two countries

The case was announced as a joint action by Emirati and Swedish authorities. UAE officials detained the Swedish fugitive after what was described as an extended effort involving searches and surveillance, while Swedish police arrested six other suspected members of the same gang at the same time.

None of the seven suspects has been publicly identified. Authorities said legal proceedings have been opened against all of them.

How investigators say the network operated

Investigators said the group processed around 70 million Swedish krona over roughly 10 months, equivalent to about 26.5 million dirhams and nearly $7.1 million. The money was allegedly collected in cash from criminal activity and then passed along to other criminal actors.

Authorities said cryptocurrencies were used as part of the laundering process to move funds and obscure their value. The investigation focused on following those digital transactions as well as reviewing other electronic evidence.

Links under investigation

Swedish investigators said their analysis connected the suspected laundering activity to broader criminal conduct. The traced transactions and digital evidence were used to assess possible ties to organized crime and contract killings.

Those links were described as part of the investigation’s findings rather than as concluded court determinations. The public information released so far does not name the suspects or detail specific charges beyond the suspected money-laundering activity.

Why crypto tracing was central

Officials credited crypto tracing with helping identify and map the movement of funds through the network. The case was presented as an example of how digital-asset analysis is being used alongside conventional surveillance and cross-border police coordination.

The UAE also highlighted its wider use of virtual-asset tracing tools as part of its anti-money-laundering framework. For now, the next confirmed step is the legal process against the seven suspects in the UAE and Sweden, following the coordinated arrests.
