Thai Immigration Police have arrested Wu Chaoshuai, a Chinese national accused of leading a cryptocurrency laundering network tied to a transnational criminal organization. Investigators say the operation moved more than $74 million through a web of bank and crypto accounts set up to conceal the flow of funds.

Authorities said Wu entered Thailand on a tourist visa in December 2019 and stayed in the country after that visa expired. Police allege he remained in Thailand while taking steps to avoid detection, including moving frequently and using forged documents linked to vehicles and license plates.

Police outline alleged laundering role

According to Thai police, Wu acted as an account mule for the broader organization while also directing others to help build the infrastructure used in the scheme. Investigators said he recruited people to open bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchange accounts that could then be used to receive, move, and obscure illicit funds.

Police said Wu managed 133 accounts in total. Across those accounts, the operation reportedly processed more than $74 million in transactions, a figure authorities tied to activity on behalf of a transnational criminal group.

Years in Thailand after tourist visa entry

Investigators said Wu entered Thailand on a tourist visa in December 2019. His visa later expired, but police believe he chose not to leave the country, likely to avoid the risk of extradition to China.

By the time of his arrest, authorities said the visa had been expired for more than three years. Thai officials are expected to charge him with remaining in the country after his permission to stay had lapsed.

Efforts to evade tracking

Police said Wu attempted to stay out of reach by moving between different residences across Thailand rather than remaining in one place. Investigators also alleged that he changed vehicles and license plates and relied on forged documents to make tracking more difficult for authorities.

He was ultimately located at a luxury house in Bangkok's Ramkhamhaeng area, where Thai Immigration Police carried out the arrest.

Extradition coordination and wider crackdown

Thai authorities said the immediate charge against Wu relates to overstaying his visa. They also said they will coordinate with Chinese authorities on extradition.

The arrest comes as Thailand has increased scrutiny of cryptocurrency-related crime and fund flows. In June, authorities in the country said they had dismantled a crypto mining money-laundering operation that allegedly handled more than $300 million a year from online scams and gambling platforms.

For now, the confirmed next step is domestic immigration action in Thailand, followed by coordination with China over extradition procedures.
