S&P Global has agreed to acquire smart contract security firm OpenZeppelin as it moves deeper into onchain technology risk. The companies did not disclose financial terms, and the transaction remains subject to closing conditions.
Under the agreement, OpenZeppelin will continue operating as a standalone business unit within S&P Global. The deal is intended to broaden S&P Global’s risk assessment capabilities into the onchain layer while giving OpenZeppelin access to the larger reach of an established market intelligence and ratings group.
A move into blockchain risk assessment
S&P Global said the acquisition is part of a push to strengthen its position in onchain security. In practical terms, the company is seeking to extend its risk assessment work beyond traditional markets and into technology risks tied to blockchain-based systems.
That focus reflects a growing overlap between conventional financial infrastructure and onchain applications, where code quality and smart contract security can become a core part of operational risk. S&P Global said bringing OpenZeppelin into the group would help address that layer of risk.
OpenZeppelin to remain a separate unit
The companies said OpenZeppelin will keep operating as its own business unit after the acquisition closes. That structure suggests S&P Global plans to retain the firm’s specialized security work and brand while integrating it into a larger corporate platform.
OpenZeppelin CEO Demian Brener said the combination would allow the company’s standards and security expertise to reach a broader range of organizations moving into onchain activity. He specifically pointed to blockchain networks and decentralized finance protocols among the groups entering that space.
What OpenZeppelin brings
Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin is known for onchain security assessments and secure development services. It has also contributed to open-source smart contract libraries that underpin a substantial share of major stablecoins and tokenized funds, according to the announcement.
Those tools and services have made the firm a recognized name in blockchain security, particularly in areas where smart contract reliability is critical. For S&P Global, that expertise offers a way to add technical security capabilities to a broader risk and analytics business.
Financial impact and next steps
Neither company disclosed the purchase price or other financial terms. S&P Global said the transaction is not expected to have a material impact on its financial results.
The acquisition has not yet closed. Completion is still subject to customary closing conditions, making that the next confirmed step before OpenZeppelin formally joins S&P Global.
