Solana is preparing a major consensus change that would replace TowerBFT with a new design called Alpenglow, with a stated goal of cutting finality to around 150 milliseconds from roughly 12.8 seconds today.
The Solana Foundation’s guidance for Agave 4.2 says the full Alpenglow code is already included for testing and hardening, but the upgrade will not be activated on mainnet in that release. Instead, the foundation says mainnet activation is expected in Agave 4.3, which is currently targeted for October 2026.
Current releases do not point to a September launch
Release timing in the Agave client line shows that Alpenglow is not yet ready for production activation. Anza published Agave 4.2.0 as a stable release suitable for mainnet beta on Aug. 7, followed by a 4.2.1 pre-release on Aug. 13.
Agave 4.3, the version tied to Alpenglow activation, is still in alpha testing. Version 4.3.0-alpha.3 was released on Aug. 5 and was explicitly marked as unsuitable for production use. Based on the current release state, there is no confirmed basis for an exact September activation date.
What Alpenglow is meant to improve
The upgrade’s headline target is finality rather than the first sign that a transaction has landed. On Solana today, users often see transactions confirmed well before the roughly 12.8-second finality window under TowerBFT has fully closed.
Finality refers to stronger cryptographic assurance that the accepted chain state will not later be reorganized. That distinction matters most for exchanges, payments, and other higher-value settlement use cases, where operators may wait for stronger certainty before treating funds as economically irreversible.
For that reason, a move from about 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds does not mean every wallet or application experience will become about 85 times faster. Many apps already display earlier confirmation states before full finality is reached.
How the new consensus design changes validation
Alpenglow would replace TowerBFT with a component called Votor and remove onchain vote transactions from the process. Instead of casting votes through onchain transactions, validators would exchange votes directly.
The system also relies on BLS signatures so that votes from thousands of validators can be aggregated into compact certificates. According to the Solana Foundation, Votor is designed to tolerate 20% adversarial stake while another 20% of stake is offline.
After the full migration, admitted validators are expected to pay a 1.6 SOL Validator Admission Ticket each epoch instead of using the current onchain voting approach. BLS public key registration is already active on mainnet and is described as a prerequisite for the new voting system.
Separate upgrade will reduce slot times first
Solana is also preparing a separate performance change through Agave 4.2 that would reduce slot times from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds. The foundation says those changes are expected to begin during the week of Aug. 17.
If network conditions remain acceptable, the rollout is expected to happen in four steps of 50 milliseconds each. That slot-time reduction is distinct from the Alpenglow consensus switch and should not be treated as the same milestone.
The next confirmed checkpoint remains further testing of Agave 4.3 ahead of a planned October 2026 release window. The foundation has not published an exact activation date or block height for Alpenglow, and deployment still depends on testing, security review, and validator readiness.
