SBI Holdings has completed the purchase of a majority stake in Singapore-based crypto exchange Coinhako, marking a further step in the Japanese financial group’s digital asset expansion in Asia. The transaction was finalized on July 16 after the company said it obtained the required approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

Deal structure and regulatory clearance

The acquisition was carried out through SBI Ventures Asset, the group’s Singapore subsidiary. According to the company, the transaction combined a capital injection into Coinhako with the purchase of shares from existing investors. As a result of the deal, Coinhako will become a consolidated subsidiary of SBI Holdings.

The company framed the purchase as part of a broader push into digital assets and related financial infrastructure. The regulatory signoff from Singapore was a key condition for completing the transaction.

Why Coinhako matters to SBI

By taking control of Coinhako, SBI gains a larger foothold in Southeast Asia through a platform that already operates in Singapore’s regulated digital asset market. The acquisition gives SBI access to Coinhako’s customer base, its regional network, and its operating experience in Singapore.

SBI has identified Singapore as an important center for its wider Asia-Pacific strategy. The group is seeking to strengthen links between digital asset platforms in Japan and Southeast Asia, while also developing cross-border trading services tied to that network.

Focus on stablecoins and tokenized markets

SBI said the transaction supports its ambitions in several areas of the digital asset sector, including tokenization, stablecoins, on-chain finance, and international digital asset transactions. The company expects Coinhako to work alongside its existing crypto infrastructure and financial businesses as that strategy develops.

One possible area of collaboration mentioned by SBI is JPYSC, a trust-based yen stablecoin being developed by SBI together with Startale. The company did not provide further details in the source material on timing or implementation, but cited the project as an example of how Coinhako could fit into its broader digital asset plans.

Singapore’s role in the regional buildout

The deal underlines the importance of Singapore in SBI’s regional expansion approach. Rather than treating the city-state only as a local market, SBI appears to be positioning it as a base for connecting services across multiple Asian jurisdictions. Coinhako’s presence there offers the group an established platform from which to pursue that goal.

The acquisition also reflects SBI’s effort to deepen its involvement in segments of the crypto and digital asset market that extend beyond exchange activity alone. Alongside trading, the company is pointing to future opportunities in tokenized finance, stablecoin-related services, and cross-border digital asset infrastructure.
