Pi Network is set to introduce Protocol 27 on mainnet on Sept. 15, adding smart contract authentication, an automated market maker decentralized exchange, and public RPC server infrastructure. The release marks the project’s first direct move toward decentralized finance on its live network.
The upgrade lands as Pi’s mainnet remains largely underused relative to its stated user base. According to the source material, only 16.6 million of the network’s claimed 60 million engaged users have migrated to mainnet, meaning most of the reported community will not yet be able to use the new features when they go live.
A DeFi expansion on a network without DeFi activity
Protocol 27 introduces core pieces typically associated with an on-chain application ecosystem: contract authentication, exchange functionality through an AMM model, and public infrastructure for network access. Together, those additions could form the technical base for broader developer and user activity on Pi mainnet.
At the same time, the rollout comes to a chain that, according to the report, has not processed a single DeFi transaction so far. The AMM DEX has existed in testnet form, but there is still no sign of mainnet liquidity or completed real-world swaps.
Migration remains the main constraint
The article says 73% of claimed users have not migrated to mainnet. With 16.6 million users moved over out of 60 million engaged Pioneers, the conversion rate stands at 27.6%, leaving a large majority outside the part of the network where Protocol 27 will operate.
That gap matters because access to the new tools depends on being on mainnet. Even if the upgrade is technically successful, practical usage may remain limited unless migration expands enough to support trading, liquidity provision, and application activity.
Testnet interest has not yet translated into live capital
Pi’s Launchpad testnet trial reportedly drew strong participation, showing that users were willing to experiment in a simulated environment. But the source article says that activity did not establish a clear route to real capital deployment on mainnet.
The same uncertainty hangs over the AMM launch. A testnet record can demonstrate technical readiness, but it does not confirm that users will supply liquidity or execute trades once the system is live. For a DeFi ecosystem, those steps are essential.
Broader strategy and open questions
Beyond DeFi, SocialChain has recast Pi’s validator base as what it calls “human infrastructure for AI.” The idea, as described in the source, is to generate revenue from identity verification and AI data-labeling services, potentially shifting the project’s economics away from reliance on trading activity alone.
The report says this leaves several questions unresolved, including the degree of centralization on the network, the pace of developer traction, and whether enough liquidity, user adoption, and enterprise demand can arrive quickly enough to support a functioning DeFi market.
Market backdrop ahead of the upgrade
Pi was trading at about $0.098 at the time referenced in the article, with a market capitalization near $1.09 billion and daily trading volume around $7.85 million. The token was also described as down 96.7% from its all-time high.
The next confirmed step is the Sept. 15 mainnet release of Protocol 27. What follows after that should provide the first live indication of whether Pi’s new DeFi components can attract actual liquidity and usage on mainnet, or whether the network’s progress remains mostly limited to test environments and partial migration.
