Ontology has paused block production on its mainnet after core developers identified a potential security concern during a routine check. The move has suspended on-chain transaction processing while developers and validators carry out an emergency review of the network and related components.
The project said the halt is a precaution rather than a response to an active attack or confirmed theft. It added that, based on its current assessment, there is no indication that user assets have been lost or compromised.
Preventive shutdown leaves transactions pending
With the chain not producing blocks, transactions submitted to the Ontology mainnet cannot be processed until operations restart. The team has not given a timetable for resuming the network and said a thorough review will take precedence over restoring service quickly.
Ontology said block production will remain temporarily suspended until the network has been sufficiently assessed and deemed safe to operate. That means normal mainnet activity will stay unavailable for as long as the investigation continues.
Developers have not disclosed the technical issue
The project has not explained the technical nature of the potential concern, identified which component triggered the review, or said whether a vulnerability has already been found that would require a software change.
Instead, Ontology said its developers are working with validators and relevant ecosystem partners to determine whether the issue under review represents a real security risk. The investigation covers the mainnet as well as related components, according to the announcement.
Network says current assessment shows no asset losses
Ontology emphasized that the pause does not currently appear to involve compromised funds. The team said there is no indication at this stage of any loss or compromise affecting user assets, and that ONT, ONG and other on-chain holdings remain unaffected based on what it has reviewed so far.
The network also said users do not need to take action with their holdings based on the information currently available. At the same time, it advised against attempting time-sensitive on-chain transactions while the mainnet remains paused, since those transactions cannot be processed during the shutdown.
Restart depends on assessment and any required upgrades
Ontology said the duration of the shutdown is still undetermined. If the ongoing review finds that upgrades are necessary, those changes will need to be completed before block production resumes.
The next confirmed step is a separate announcement before or when the network restarts. Until then, Ontology said it will continue to publish updates through its official channels as more information becomes available.
