Numerai says it has completed a third strategic open-market purchase of its Numeraire token, adding $1.2 million of NMR and bringing total buybacks over the past year to $3.2 million. The San Francisco-based firm said the latest purchase had already been finished before it was publicly disclosed.

Buyback adds to treasury replenishment

According to Numerai, the additional NMR was purchased on the open market as part of an effort to replenish treasury holdings used for tournament rewards and staking incentives. The company said approximately 3.1 million NMR remained in its treasury before this latest transaction.

Numeraire is described by the firm as a fixed-supply Ethereum token with a cap of 11 million NMR. Numerai said its reward and staking system depends on treasury-held tokens, which is why it has continued buying NMR in the market rather than issuing new supply.

Execution through Coinbase Institutional

The company said the third buyback, like the previous two, was carried out through Coinbase Institutional. Numerai added that the purchases were executed at or near the bid price over several weeks in an effort to limit market impact.

Unlike its earlier buyback announcements, Numerai said this latest transaction had already been fully completed before the company announced it. The firm did not provide a more detailed breakdown of dates or volumes in the statement.

Role of NMR in Numerai’s model network

Numerai links the token directly to the operation of its data science competition and hedge fund model. Independent contributors stake NMR on their forecasting models, with rewards paid in additional NMR if predictions perform well on future market data and losses incurred if they do not.

The company said this mechanism helps align thousands of outside data scientists around improving its Stake-Weighted Meta Model, the machine-learning system used to power the hedge fund. Numerai also claimed that this combined model continues to outperform its internal benchmark models.

Growth in users, infrastructure and assets

Numerai said its network has expanded since the first strategic buyback announced in July 2025. Active accounts have more than doubled over the past year, according to the company, while submissions have continued to rise.

It also pointed to several newer pieces of infrastructure, including Numerai Skills, Numerai Model Context Protocol, or MCP, and Atomic Blockchain Staking, which it said support more autonomous participation by AI systems.

Beyond the contributor network, Numerai reported growth in the investment business tied to the platform. The firm said assets under management have increased to about $700 million, up from roughly $560 million at the end of 2025.

Numerai was founded in 2015 and describes itself as a hedge fund and data science platform that aggregates stock-market signals from a global competition into a single model used to trade equities. The latest buyback announcement ties that operating model to continued support for the token-based staking system that underpins participant incentives.
