Mt. Gox has delayed its creditor repayment deadline by another year, shifting the date from Oct. 31, 2026, to Oct. 31, 2027, after obtaining court approval in Japan. The extension gives the rehabilitation trustee more time to continue distributions to creditors who have not yet received funds under the existing repayment process.
Rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi said many creditors remain unpaid because they have not completed the required procedures or because problems arose during repayment processing. He said that for eligible creditors who submitted the necessary information and encountered no issues, Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment and Intermediate Repayment have largely been completed.
Why the deadline was moved again
In a notice dated Oct. 16, Kobayashi said the repayment deadline was extended because a considerable number of creditors still have not received payment. The explanation covered both creditors who have yet to finish the procedures needed to receive funds and those who completed the steps but ran into issues during the distribution process.
The court-approved extension adds 12 months for the trustee to keep making repayments where doing so remains reasonably practicable. The new deadline is Oct. 31, 2027, in Japan Standard Time.
No change to repayment categories or entitlements
The latest notice did not introduce any new type of repayment and did not announce changes to the amounts creditors are entitled to receive. Instead, it focused on outstanding payments still being handled within Mt. Gox's current civil rehabilitation framework.
Under that framework, creditors may receive funds through different arrangements, including Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment and Intermediate Repayment. Kobayashi said completing payments for remaining unpaid creditors is desirable to the extent reasonably practicable.
How creditors can seek information
Creditors looking for updates on their claims were directed to the online rehabilitation claims system, where inquiries can be submitted through the frequently asked questions section. The trustee also said a separate inquiry form is available without logging in, although identity verification may be more difficult in those cases.
The rehabilitation team warned that responses could take time because of the volume of requests. That suggests administrative processing remains a factor in the long-running payout effort.
A process marked by repeated delays
The new extension continues a pattern of annual postponements. In October 2025, the trustee moved the deadline from Oct. 31, 2025, to Oct. 31, 2026. A year earlier, the completion date had already been pushed from October 2024 to October 2025.
These repeated delays come more than a decade after Mt. Gox collapsed in 2014 and filed for bankruptcy after losing about 850,000 BTC. The exchange later entered civil rehabilitation proceedings, and distributions through designated exchanges, including Kraken and Bitstamp, began in July 2024.
What happens next
The confirmed next step is that the rehabilitation process will continue under the revised schedule through Oct. 31, 2027. For now, the trustee has indicated that remaining repayments will proceed under the existing plan for creditors who still need to complete procedures or resolve processing issues.
No broader revisions to the rehabilitation structure were announced in the latest notice, leaving the immediate focus on completing outstanding distributions that have not yet been finalized.
