Lido has introduced a new version of its staking infrastructure for Ethereum, launching Curated Module v2 with changes aimed at making validator operations more efficient while adding stricter rules for node operators. The upgrade supports Ethereum’s 0x02 withdrawal credentials and, according to Lido, could eventually reduce the network’s validator count by roughly one-third if its projected migration takes place.

Upgrade targets validator efficiency

At the center of the release is support for 0x02 withdrawal credentials, a change that lets validators raise their effective balance well beyond the long-standing 32 ETH level. Under the new setup, that balance can increase to as much as 2,048 ETH.

Lido, which offers liquid staking through its stETH token, said this change is intended to improve how staking is managed on Ethereum. The protocol estimates that, after migration, the total number of Ethereum validators could fall from around 880,000 to about 628,000. The company described that as a reduction of about one-third.

Those figures remain projections. Lido said the migration itself has not begun.

Consensus-layer impact, not fee changes

According to Lido, the expected effect of the upgrade is concentrated on Ethereum’s consensus layer. With fewer validators, the network would also require fewer validator messages to keep operating.

Lido said the change is not meant to alter execution-layer activity, the part of Ethereum that determines transaction processing, gas use and fees. In other words, the protocol framed the upgrade as an infrastructure change for staking and validator operations rather than a direct change to how transactions are priced onchain.

New rules for node operators

Curated Module v2 also adds new accountability mechanisms for Lido’s node operators. These include bonding requirements and penalty systems intended to strengthen operator responsibility within the protocol.

Lido said future stake allocation may increasingly take into account factors such as operator performance, fee levels and contributions to Ethereum’s broader ecosystem. The protocol described the release as a further step in the evolution of its curated staking setup, with updated incentives, bond-based security features and governance changes.

Protocol-level migration

The upgrade is being handled at the protocol level, and Lido said stakers do not need to take any action as a result of the rollout. While the system changes are now live, the larger validator migration that could reduce Ethereum’s validator count remains a planned process rather than an event already underway.

The announcement places Lido’s latest release in the middle of a broader effort to refine how large-scale Ethereum staking is organized. Based on Lido’s own description, the immediate significance lies in new infrastructure support and operator rules, while the projected reduction in validator numbers will depend on a migration that has yet to start.
