Igloo Inc. is shutting down Abstract, its Ethereum layer-2 network, on December 15 after concluding that a standalone chain built around “consumer crypto” could not be sustained. The company said users must move assets off the network before the cutoff or risk losing access to funds left on the chain.

The network’s team directed users to withdraw through Abstract’s Migration Hub or its native bridge, which carries a three-hour delay. Abstract also said its engineers will help projects still operating on the chain migrate to other networks.

Shutdown timeline and user deadline

The closure gives Abstract users a fixed window to exit the network. According to the announcement, the chain will go dark on December 15, and any assets remaining after that point will become inaccessible.

To move funds off the network, users have been told to use either Abstract’s Migration Hub or the chain’s native bridge. The bridge is not instant: the team said withdrawals through that route take about three hours, a detail that could matter as the deadline approaches.

Why Abstract is closing

Abstract said the project struggled to grow beyond the niche it was designed to serve. Igloo launched the network around the idea of “consumer crypto,” aiming for applications that would appeal to everyday users rather than focusing primarily on financial activity or institutional demand.

In explaining the shutdown, the project pointed to several constraints: a limited DeFi environment, thin on-chain liquidity, little crossover from institutional participants, and a smaller budget than competing chains. In the team’s assessment, a chain focused only on consumer crypto was not viable as an independent model.

What the network achieved

Even as it prepares to close, Abstract highlighted the scale it says it reached during its run. By the project’s own figures, the network processed more than 325 million transactions, generated over $6 billion in decentralized exchange volume, and produced more than $40 million in ecosystem revenue.

Abstract also said users created more than 4 million Abstract Global Wallets. It added that major brands, including Red Bull Racing and Disney, used the chain as a way to reach audiences, underscoring the mainstream-brand strategy that sat at the center of the project.

Background and next steps

Technically, Abstract operated as a ZK-rollup, an Ethereum layer-2 design that batches transactions and verifies them on Ethereum with zero-knowledge proofs. Igloo had positioned that infrastructure as the base for apps that could mirror the broader popularity Pudgy Penguins found through toys and social media.

The next confirmed step is the network’s wind-down on December 15. Before then, users need to bridge out assets, and project teams still deployed on Abstract are expected to work with its engineers on migrations to other chains.
