Hong Kong’s EnsembleTX pilot has widened the way tokenized deposit transactions can be settled between banks, adding a tokenized central bank money channel that operates around the clock. The change means the interbank leg that sits behind tokenized deposit payments is no longer restricted to the operating hours of the city’s real-time gross settlement system.

The pilot is run by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and is designed to support tokenized deposits across multiple banks. Alongside the settlement upgrade, the HKMA has also increased the number of participating banks and other early users in the project.

Why the settlement change matters

In EnsembleTX, tokenized deposits are liabilities of individual banks rather than a single shared instrument. Because of that structure, a payment made using one bank’s tokenized deposit and received through another bank still needs a corresponding interbank settlement movement in the background.

Until now, that interbank portion relied on RTGS. By adding tokenized central bank money, the pilot can now support that settlement process in tokenized form on a 24/7 basis, rather than only during normal RTGS hours.

Pilot participation expands

The HKMA said the number of banks involved in EnsembleTX has risen to 12 from seven. It also increased the number of other “pioneer” participants to 20, up from 13.

The expansion suggests the authority is widening practical testing of tokenized payment and settlement flows, while keeping the project within a pilot structure.

Focus on treasury payments and tokenized funds

The main use cases highlighted so far are corporate treasury payments using tokenized deposits and investment into tokenized money market funds. These are areas where faster and more flexible settlement can matter, especially when transactions need to move across institutions.

The article notes that Hong Kong only recently launched regulated trading of tokenized money market funds through one of the city’s local crypto exchanges. In that setting, round-the-clock tokenized central bank money could help corporates move funds in and out without having to wait for traditional subscription and redemption windows.

What comes next

For now, EnsembleTX remains a pilot, but the latest update shows the HKMA is adding both technical capability and a broader group of participants. The immediate confirmed next step is continued testing of the expanded settlement model across the enlarged network of banks and pioneer users.

The clearest near-term context is the link between tokenized deposits, interbank settlement, and tokenized fund activity. With 24/7 tokenized central bank money now available inside the pilot, Hong Kong is testing whether those pieces can work together beyond the limits of conventional payment hours.
