Emirates NBD has launched real-time cross-border U.S. dollar payments through the Partior blockchain network, opening the service to eligible corporate and institutional clients in its first live use of Partior’s settlement infrastructure.
Initial rollout
The Dubai-based bank announced the launch on July 14. In the first phase, the service supports U.S. dollar transfers to beneficiaries holding J.P. Morgan accounts. J.P. Morgan took part in the first live transaction in a dual role, acting as both the settlement bank and the beneficiary bank.
According to the announcement, the setup allows eligible payments to settle in real time within a regulated banking framework. The bank said this reduces dependence on traditional processing windows and is intended to provide faster execution as well as clearer visibility into transaction status.
How the network will be used
The new U.S. dollar corridor is described as the starting point for a broader expansion of Emirates NBD’s use of the Partior network. The bank said it plans to connect with additional financial institutions over time, which would extend access to more currencies and a wider range of cross-border payment routes.
Beyond straight payment transfers, Emirates NBD also plans to use the network for programmable liquidity management. That would be aimed at helping businesses manage cash positions more efficiently across different markets. Partior’s platform, as described in the source report, enables participating banks to clear and settle payments on a round-the-clock basis.
Part of a wider digital push
The payments launch comes amid a broader digital asset strategy across the Emirates NBD group. The source article noted that Liv, the group’s digital banking brand, has introduced cryptocurrency trading through its Liv X app in partnership with Aquanow and Zodia Custody.
The report also said the group has explored Bitcoin as part of its investment strategy. No additional detail was provided in the source on the scope or status of that exploration.
Regional backdrop
The development also fits into a wider rise in digital asset activity in the UAE. The source article said the region has recorded substantial cryptocurrency flows, underscoring growing adoption of blockchain- and crypto-related financial services.
For Emirates NBD, the immediate step is narrower: a live blockchain-based cross-border payment service for eligible clients, beginning with U.S. dollar transfers tied to J.P. Morgan accounts. The bank’s next phase, according to the announcement, is to broaden that network over time with more currencies, more counterparties, and additional treasury-related uses.
