Dash has activated Orchard-based shielded pools on its Evolution mainnet, introducing private transfers built on zero-knowledge proofs rather than its older coin-mixing system. The rollout allows DASH transactions to conceal the sender, recipient and amount from public view, while the project says confirmations can arrive in about one second and wallet sync can take roughly 20 seconds.

Privacy model shifts on mainnet

The launch moves Dash’s privacy stack away from PrivateSend, which relied on CoinJoin-style mixing between users to obscure transaction trails. Orchard instead uses the zero-knowledge proof system developed for Zcash, aiming to hide transaction details without requiring coins to be shuffled among participants.

Dash said the shielded pools were live immediately on the Evolution chain. According to the project, the initial mainnet version applies to ordinary DASH transfers. Additional privacy features for stablecoins and other assets are planned for later stages.

Built on Evolution and open-source code

Dash added Orchard to its Evolution chain, which launched in 2024 and was designed to support faster transactions as well as token-based applications. The project described Orchard’s codebase as open source and mature, saying that helped make the integration easier than expected.

The result is a privacy layer that changes how Dash handles confidential transfers. Rather than relying on transaction mixing, the new model uses cryptography to shield key payment information directly.

Timing overlaps with a Zcash security issue

The activation comes at a sensitive moment for Orchard technology more broadly. A flaw had been identified in Zcash’s Orchard shielded pool that could have allowed unlimited minting of counterfeit ZEC. That issue was patched within days, and there were no confirmed cases of exploitation, according to the source article.

Zcash’s Ironwood upgrade, intended to address the problem, is scheduled to activate on July 28. The source article said Dash’s implementation is separate and that the Zcash flaw does not directly affect Dash, even though Dash’s integration arrived only weeks after the bug was discovered.
