BitMEX, one of the early names in crypto derivatives trading, is set to shut down in September, bringing a 12-year run to a close. Parent company HDR Global Trading decided to cease operations after what was described as a broad strategic review, according to Cointelegraph.

Shutdown timetable

The exchange said it will stop operating on Sept. 23. BitMEX, which was founded in 2014, will therefore end service 12 years after its launch.

Ahead of the closure, the company told users to close any open positions and withdraw funds held on the platform before operations end. No alternative timetable beyond the Sept. 23 shutdown date was detailed in the source report.

Instructions to customers

BitMEX said customer assets will remain fully secure until the platform ceases operations. The company repeated its request that users wind down their trading activity and remove funds within the specified period.

The report did not include further operational details on how final account closures or any remaining liquidation procedures would be handled. BitMEX also did not disclose the reason behind the decision to shut the exchange.

A long-standing derivatives venue

BitMEX has long been regarded as one of the exchanges that helped shape the early cryptocurrency derivatives market. It became particularly well known for popularizing perpetual futures, a type of contract that allows traders to speculate on crypto price moves without a fixed expiry date.

That role gave the platform an outsized place in the sector’s development, especially during the years when derivatives products became a central part of digital-asset trading activity.

What remains unclear

While the closure date and customer instructions have been made public, key questions remain unanswered. The company has not provided a public explanation for the shutdown, and no details were given in the report about how any liquidation process may work.

For users, the immediate issue is procedural rather than explanatory: open positions are to be closed and funds withdrawn before Sept. 23, with the company saying assets will remain secure until then.

BitMEX’s exit marks the end of a platform that played a notable role in the growth of crypto derivatives, even as the final reasons for its closure have not been disclosed.
